Sustainability through interconnections

Sustainability through interconnections

This 115 cm X 115 cm wall hanging was created for the Global Conference to build upon the planner's vision of integrating art and science to promote sustainable societal changes. I liked the complexity of this pattern because it reflects the scientific concepts of reductionism and holism. When one first looks at the world, as in looking at the wall hanging, it is incredibly complex. Continued study helps one to break it down into recognizable elements and to then put them back together with all of their interconnections being observable in a clearer way.

I developed this wall hanging from scraps of 120 different fabrics I saved while making other quilts. This reflects the value of conservation.

Some of the fabrics are representative of various countries or cultures. They are incorporated into the design to emphasize that the search for knowledge includes everyone and that we all have a role in the work that needs to be done.

It is my hope that this wall hanging will inspire us to use our intuitive and logical skills for preventing and solving societal problems. I share it with happiness and hope that we will soon make the transition to equitable sustainable societies.

Landfill Harmonic Amazing and Inspirational

A cello made from an oil can and pieces of wood, that were thrown in the garbage; a saxophone made of spoons and buttons. These instruments are crafted by Nicolas, a 'recycler' with no previous experience making musical instruments, who is living 'hand-to-mouth' by the garbage dump in Catuera, Paraguay. Inspired by this initiative and creativity, Maestro Luis Szaran, director of "Sounds of the Earth," formed the 'recycled orchestra,' with children living near the dump. "Our main goal isn't to form good musicians, but to form good citizens." Now 30 members strong, (and looking for more, for a full orchestra) listen to the sweet sounds of these 'recycled' instruments and the hopes and dreams of the children who play them. ... Be Amazed and Inspired!

Konohana Family

Konohana Family is an agriculture-based community where about 100 non blood-related people, comprised of 80 members and guests live as one big family at the foot of Mt. Fuji in Japan. Each member tries to get over his/her own ego by facing him/herself seriously, with the result that each unique personality will blossom beautifully. Kono in Konohana means individual and Hana means flowers in Japanese. Therefore, if each individual blooms as a flower, collectively we will become one large flower, just as in natural ecosystems all lives are connected as part of an even bigger life—the planet Earth.

The Earth Statement

The Earth Statement is a gift from the times to all humans living on Earth. It has been brought down at the great turning points in terms of the history of humans, the Earth and the universe. This gift is for everyone, so please feel free to share this message with your family and friends.

The artwork drawn by Himiko Oki

I am a 7-year-old Japanese girl and a part of Konohana Family where about 100 people, old and young live together. I drew the poster titled, “The Happy Living in the Place of the Sun,” hoping all the countries in the world will get along and everyone will live in peace forever!

A poem written by Himiko Oki

When I learned how to make one country peaceful at school, I felt even if one country becomes peaceful, the world cannot be peaceful. Then, I have realized if everyone makes ONE PEACE, the world can be peaceful and this poem came up to me.

“If Everyone’s Mind in the World Becomes ONE”
By Himiko Oki

There is such a thing as a country
It is countries that make wars
So, even if one country becomes peaceful
The world cannot be peaceful

There is also such a thing as the world
If everyone makes ONE PEACE
The world can be peaceful!

Himiko came from the place of the sun

In the place of the sun
There is no country

The rice of the sun is not hot but warm

The sweets of the sun are small rainbow candies

The rainbow candy has 500% of invisible and shiny light

If you eat that candy
You will become smart and bask in power

In the place of the sun
Everyone can use magic

In the place of the sun
There are carpets made of fluffy clouds like trampolines
In the hallways of the houses

In the place of the sun
All the plants, insects, animals and birds can talk

Everyone understands each other’s mind rather than talks

There are also big rainbow locusts
Which are very gentle

In the place of the sun
Both children and adults always play and laugh

So, there is no war

In the place of the sun
There is neither the death penalty nor prisons
There are no policemen, either

However, the king of the sun sometimes becomes angry

The king of the sun is watching the Earth
He knows humans make wars

So, he told me to go to the Earth,
Find my friends
And settle the wars a little bit

Then, Himiko was born on Earth

When I asked the king of the sun to drop me into the sea of the Earth
He gently guided me toward the Earth

And then I came down to the Konohana Family in Japan!!

There is a man called Isadon in the Konohana Family

The king of the sun says
Isadon is greater than the Japanese Prime Minister
He also says Isadon is like a king to govern the Earth

Isadon says there is only one life
So we should value it

Then I imagined
“What kind of shape one life would be?”
“If everyone’s mind in the world is put together
What will happen?”

If everyone’s mind in the world becomes ONE
The world will become peaceful
And right away there will be no war!

When I grow up
I am going to try to make
Everyone’s mind in the world become ONE
